Facebook Rolling Out New Facial Recognition Features
Marie Donlon | December 20, 2017Facebook announced this week that they will be offering new facial recognition technology meant to protect user privacy and to prevent catfishing of its users.
According to a recent statement from the social media platform, users opting to enable the new features will receive alerts any time an image of that user is uploaded to the site, even if the user isn’t tagged in the photo or friends with the person doing the uploading.
Facebook will also notify its users if his or her face appears in a profile picture. This feature targets catfishing or “revenge porn” attempts where a user’s image is being used, usually without consent, to create fake profiles or to share intimate photos.
Also new to the site is a voice-tagging feature that informs visually impaired users of the people being tagged alongside them in Facebook photos.
However, in order to enable the new features, a user will need to grant Facebook authorization to access, store and match users’ face data with images throughout the site.
The new features are being added to the site amid an ongoing lawsuit concerning Facebook’s handling of users' faceprints. The suit alleges that Facebook violated the state of Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act concerning the collection and storage of biometric data.
The new features will be available in the coming weeks.
I'm concerned on the encroachment from the media software...
Who actually not only reads the social agreements but understands them before digitally approves them?
And you get stuff like this.
Of course it'll be denied....
