The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Infrastructure Resilience Division (IRD) deployed a team of experts in Mexico City, Mexico, this week to gather information on infrastructure resilience in earthquakes in the wake of the 7.1 magnitude Sept. 19 earthquake.

According to a press release issued today, the team will investigate the performance and recovery of the infrastructure systems impacted by the recent earthquake. The group will be collecting data locally from Nov. 12 to Nov. 18, and is led by Craig Davis, Ph.D., G.E., P.E., and Allison Pyrch, G.E., P.E. The ASCE IRD team will work closely with Prof. Gustavo Ayala of National Autonomous University of Mexico, based in Mexico City.

“This gives us an opportunity to learn specifics about their infrastructure — how it performed, why it performed the way it did, how it affected community resilience,” said Davis. “What we gain out of that can be applied as lessons learned to different infrastructure systems across the country.”
