Hardest hit, according to the OIV, are the top three wine producers — Italy, France and Spain. Italy experienced a 23 percent decline in production while France experienced a 19 percent decline and Spain a 15 percent decline.
Wine production in the United States — the world’s fourth largest wine producer — fared better with only a 1 percent decline. However, that estimate was given before the California wildfires overwhelmed the leading wine-producing locales of Sonoma County and Napa Valley.
