Ford Plans Connected Vehicle R&D Center
David Wagman | April 03, 2017Ford Motor Co. reportedly is expanding its Canadian research and development presence with a C$500 million ($374 million) investment to establish an Ottawa Research and Engineering Center.
The additional 400 engineers, around 300 of whom will be based in Canada, more than doubles Ford’s mobile connectivity engineering team.
“Connectivity is the critical component to the future of mobility,” says Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president, global product development and chief technical officer.
In addition, Ford is investing $200 million for an advanced data center to support the company’s expansion to an auto and a mobility company. It is the second of two new data centers Ford is building in Michigan.
The second new data center will be located at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant, where the company is investing $700 million to create a factory capable of producing high-tech electrified and autonomous vehicles.
News reports say the new Ottawa research center will focus on R&D across infotainment, in-vehicle modems, gateway modules, driver-assist features, and autonomous vehicles. Additional facilities will be located in Waterloo and Oakville, Ontario, as well as Cary, NC, and Sunrise, Fla.
In the past six months, Ford reportedly has announced C$1.2 billion in Canadian investments, including a C$700 million investment in its manufacturing facilities.
In late March the automaker said it had announced investments worth $1.2 billion in three Michigan manufacturing plants so far this year.
The company plans to invest $850 million in its Michigan Assembly Plant to retool the plant to build the Ford Ranger and Ford Bronco models. Production of the Ranger will begin at the end of 2018 and the Bronco in 2020.
The company also plans to invest $150 million to expand capacity for engine components for several vehicles, including Ranger and Bronco, at its Romeo Engine Plant in Michigan.
