Hybrid Storage for Electric Microgrid
Engineering360 News Desk | February 13, 2017The Chugach Electric Association has selected ABB to develop a microgrid o boost reliability in the utility's Anchorage, AK, service territory. Flywheel and battery storage solutions will combine to promote the integration of more renewable energy, including wind power from a 17 MW wind farm located about 4 km off the coast.
Part of the ABB modular microgrid.ABB will install its modular and containerized microgrid solution PowerStore to merge the capabilities of the two storage technologies. microgrid solution to blend flywheel and battery storage. The flywheel will facilitate the integration of fluctuating wind power and the battery will be used for long-term storage. The battery has a capacity of 500 kWh, with a maximum performance of 2 MW.
Monitoring of the hybrid storage solution will be effected by ABB’s Microgrid Plus control system, which will also ensure proper load sharing between the two storage technologies. It is also equipped for remote service and maintenance.
