A prototype system developed by wind energy company Gamesa to supply offgrid power in remote areas now includes a lithium power storage battery.

The offgrid prototype in Spain. Image source: GamesaThe offgrid prototype in Spain. Image source: GamesaThe system was installed in La Muela, Spain, and combines the battery with wind power, solar power, and diesel-powered generation into a solution with installed capacity of more than 2 MW.

The battery stores 429 kW of power. It operates in conjunction with the 850 kW capacity Gamesa G52 wind turbine, 816 photovoltaic modules with a total output of 245 kWp, and three 222-kW diesel generators.

Hybrid Power Controller software enables remote management of the power system, including charging the batteries up and down, the start-up and stoppage of the various systems, and activation of operating modes such as a "zero diesel" mode.
