A new type of fabric material that can withstand extreme temperatures — and that is waterproof and windproof, while also maintaining breathability — has been developed by a China-based company.

The fabric created by Safmax was recently presented at the Public Security Tech Expo in Lianyungang, China.

According to its developers, the new flame-retardant material can withstand temperatures up to 2,192° F and can maintain structure without deforming, shrinking or melting.

The team suggests that this new fabric can be used in firefighting suits and fire blankets to isolate airflow amid battery fires in new energy vehicles.

The Safmax team explained that the nano-membrane material can be applied to standard fabric with a thickness of just 1% of human hair.

The team demonstrated at the expo that water could not pass through the nano-membrane material, and yet air was quickly released. This enables the fabric to be both waterproof and breathable.
