One of the largest water companies in the U.K. is testing the utility of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in automating and monitoring entire waste catchments. The trial program launched by Severn Trent in Derbyshire will examine the use of AI to predict weather conditions, forecast maintenance and control waste flow to better manage the company’s network.

The project will continue through 2025 as part of the Ofwat Innovation Fund established by the Water Services Regulation Authority for England and Wales to grow the water sector’s capacity to innovate, andSource: Severn Trent WaterSource: Severn Trent Water meet the evolving needs of customers, society and the environment. The innovative AI technology is expected to allow Severn Trent’s network to operate more efficiently and predict and prevent issues before they occur, which can translate into fewer overflow activations and better management of its network in storm conditions.

When heavy rain is predicted, the network will automatically optimize storage ready for the extra flow and divert water away from overflows and hot spots, reducing the risk of flooding and pollution for customers. The technology will be deployed on Severn Trent’s pumping stations, which will operate independently, using forecasting and real-time monitors.
