Argentinian startup Nat4bio has developed a food-grade coating to protect produce from microscopic threats.

In addition to protecting against microscopic threats, the coating is designed to protect against pesticides while also limiting the exchange of gases that expedite ripening.

The edible coating is composed of a glucose-based polymer that is combined with other food-grade excipients in small quantities. The excipients are intended to provide the coating with mechanical properties including viscosity, adherence and film elasticity.

Nat4bio, which is currently demonstrating its food-grade coating for citrus fruits at Startup Battlefield at TechCrunch Disrupt, intends to prototype coating formulas for avocados and berries going forward.
