In a world where seemingly every business is looking at their carbon footprint, one facility in California is offering a unique, environmentally friendly process to deal with a very sensitive subject: death.

Escondido, California, is home to The White Rose, a deathcare facility that offers flameless cremation or “aqua cremation.” Known by its scientific terminology as “alkaline hydrolysis,” this process combines water and alkali to accelerate the natural decomposition process. This technology is gentler on the deceased’s remains and is a responsible choice for the environment when compared to other burial or cremation methods.

Many might wonder what will be left of someone after flameless cremation. The company states that there are often 20% more remains available after this process when compared to standard cremation. They can be stored just as someone would traditional ashes.

Aquamation International is the major manufacturer of machines that perform aqua cremation. The process is completely automated and uses less than 10% of the electricity required for traditional cremation. The company manufactures flameless cremation tanks for clients globally and is the funeral industry leader in this process technology.
