Kia to Include Autonomous Driving Tech by 2020
Engineering 360 News Desk | November 17, 2015Korean automaker Kia says it plans to introduce a range of "partially-autonomous" driving technologies to its model lineup by 2020. It plans to have a fully-autonomous car by 2030.
The company says it will invest $2 billion by 2018 to develop the first of its advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) technologies, which include sensors to detect other vehicles and hazards, read the road ahead and identify poor driving conditions. The automaker says that advanced computing systems will allow the car to make decisions based on information gathered by the sensors. Electronic and mechanical systems will enable the vehicle to carry out the decisions taken by its autonomous technologies.

- Highway Driving Assist, which is designed to automatically maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead while keeping the car in its lane and observing speed limits using information from the navigation system. The system will also assist in safely overtaking other vehicles on the highway.
- Traffic Jam Assist will track the vehicle in front during moderate- to highly-congested traffic conditions. The system will use sensors to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front and keep the car in its lane.
- Remote Advanced Parking Assist System, which will allow the vehicle to park itself when the driver presses a smart key button while within a certain range of the car.
Kia says it will aim to introduce fully-autonomous vehicles by 2030 that include vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-everything communication.
