Water risk mitigation tool for industrial facilities
S. Himmelstein | August 10, 2021The increasing incidence of drought in some regions and flood events in others underscores the need for business and industry to mitigate water supply and production interruption risks by tracking their water footprint. A new software as a service platform has been developed to help facilities manage water availability.
The platform devised by San Francisco-based startup Waterplan provides insights into the physical, regulatory and social water security risks facing facility operations by use of state-of-the-art climate data models and Basin analytics leverage satellite imagery and hydrologic and climate models to improve risk assessments. Operational data are combined with local water satellite imagery to deliver a real-time financial assessment of water risk, such as production being disrupted or facilities having to be relocated.
The analysis offers tailored mitigation and adaptation opportunities, from conventional infrastructure to nature-based solutions. For each mitigation opportunity identified, the platform monitors performance and return of investment based on the latest frameworks and techniques.
The water stewardship tool simplifies water usage and availability monitoring for companies and highlights main vulnerabilities of specific watersheds in real-time to identify risks.
