Transocean, an offshore drilling company, has developed a safety system that pairs wearable technology with drilling floor equipment and controls for machine stopping.

The safety system, dubbed HaloGuard, features a wearable alarm, a real-time location transmitter and machine vision for tracking personnel and drilling equipment in use on the drilling floor.

According to Transocean, the wearable technology will issue an alarm if the wearer comes within a predetermined distance of the drilling equipment. If the wearer does not leave that location, the equipment will automatically cease operation.

Transocean is preparing to deploy HaloGuard to a handful of drilling rigs in 2021, according to the company.
