Russia’s United Engine Corp will begin development of next-generation aircraft and rocket engines using pulse detonation technology. The development was announced at the Innovation Day of the Defense Ministry 2015 international exhibition in Kubinka.

Subsonic and supersonic demonstrator engines based on the pulse detonation technology already exist. Estimates are that there is a 30-50% improvement of thrust and fuel consumption compared to traditional engines.

The goal of the development project is to achieve currently unattainable performance for highly maneuverable aircraft. The project will also provide advanced combat load and range to supersonic and hypersonic missiles and guided weapons.
