An ultraviolet (UV) light device that sanitizes handrails is being added to escalators throughout the London Underground — the rapid transit system that serves Greater London and other adjacent regions of the U.K. — in an effort to restore confidence in mass transit amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Once connected, the device’s UV bulb is activated by the motion of the escalator handrails. While in motion, the UV light offers uninterrupted sanitation of the handrail surfaces, which are high risk infection sites.

The device — which is being implemented via Transport for London, the government body responsible for the transport system in Greater London — reportedly improves sanitation efforts by 50%.

Currently, 200 of these devices are being incorporated into escalator handrail systems throughout the London Underground network following an earlier successful six-week trial of the technology. The technology joins a host of other efforts to restore commuter confidence in mass transit following the COVID-19 pandemic. Among those efforts being instituted by Transport for London include using hospital-grade disinfectants on high-risk surfaces throughout London Underground stations and the addition of roughly 1,000 hand sanitizing kiosks.

UV light is emerging as a potential solution for preventing the spread of COVID-19 and it is being used in everything from drones designed to disinfect high-risk hospital surfaces to UV sanitizing robots designed to disinfect surfaces on airplanes.
