Sensors and other delicate components need to stay within their operating temperature range to function properly. Their susceptibility to thermal damage can be detrimental to system-wide performance. So how do you control for optimal temperature and prevent heat leak from entering the sensor area? Well, in this video, with crayons as a stand-in for sensors and instruments, you'll see how.

In the video, you will see two crayons placed into nearly identical cans before being exposed to approximately 600°C. The can on the right is a single-walled stainless steel can with 0.4 mm wall thickness. The can on the left is a double-walled stainless steel can built with Insulon® Technology. The application of an Insulon® thermal lining has increased the overall wall thickness from 0.4 mm to 1.6 mm.

Crayons are extremely thermally sensitive, beginning to soften at 41°C and melting between 49°C and 64°C. Will the 1.6 mm can be enough to protect the crayon from 600°C exposure? Watch the video to find out!

What is Insulon® Technology?

Insulon® Technology is a patented vacuum insulation technology used to create high performance thermal barriers. With a wide operating temperature range (-270°C to 1000°C), Insulon® provides unique insulation solutions for a variety of industries including medical, aerospace, consumer goods and more.

Ultra-thin overall wall thickness makes Insulon® an ideal insulator for space-constrained applications. Insulon® delivers high insulation values, often with just millimeters of insulation thickness.

High mechanical strength sets Insulon® apart from many conventional insulation materials. Built from corrosion-resistant metals including stainless steel, Inconel and other alloys, Insulon® delivers high performance insulation in a mechanically robust package. Our engineers carefully consider your application's structural load requirements when designing Insulon® products.

The inert materials used to build Insulon® can also help reduce risk of particulates and contaminates that may come with other insulation materials. Insulon® is designed as a passive insulation solution, delivered as standalone components without moving parts. If applications require food-grade or medical-grade insulation, our engineers carefully select materials to fulfill those important requirements.
