Team develops app for detecting dust build-up in real time
Marie Donlon | August 05, 2020Researchers from Purdue University have developed a new image- and video-based app that can detect the accumulation of suspended dust with the potential for explosion in real time.
The app, which relies on OpenCV algorithms to detect the build up of dust, can locate suspended dust, distinguishing it from standard background noise in manufacturing, powder handling and agricultural environments.

Locating the build-up of suspended dust in real time would enable employers to take precautions before an explosive atmosphere is formed, thereby preventing dust explosions.
According to the app’s developers, unlike current methods for detecting the build up of dust, which are often expensive and complicated, the app is easy to use and does not required specialized training.
The research appears in the Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industry.
