High speed press propels aviation industry
August 26, 2019Hydraulic presses are the key to quick, consistent production for manufacturing operations in both the United States and abroad. Savage’s hydraulic presses can be found streamlining production on shop floors, supporting down-hole drilling manufacturers for the petroleum industry, ensuring national defense in military facilities, supporting advances in R&D, facilitating improvements for medical equipment manufacturers, and furthering the development of environmentally-conscious subway, railcar, and air-borne transportation. Savage is also a major industry supplier for the research and development of powder compacts, pyrotechnics for riot control, and the compaction of explosives for the defense industry.
Savage designed and manufactured this line of presses specifically for the hot extrusion of billets. In production, a heated superalloy billet is placed in a die and the machine then hot-extrudes the billet through the die orifice to create a preform. The preform will then be forged into a jet engine component.
Savage’s slab side, bolted and keyed construction provides rigid, lasting durability in even the most demanding applications such as hot extrusion, punching, blanking, piercing, forging, drawing, perforating, and other metalforming applications. The moving platen is guided on adjustable 45-degree gibs to ensure precise parallelism, lengthening both press and die life, while graphite-impregnated bronze gib liners eliminate the need for lubrication in the hot zone. Die heating is fluid-controlled.
The control panel features comfort-touch buttons and a touch-screen display where the operator can enter setpoints, access programs and store recipes for fast, repeatable production.
This model allows for two pressing speeds. An accumulator boosts pressing speed during extrusion, and an under-bed ejector expels the finished preform from the die upon cycle completion.
All hydraulics are located overhead in a maintenance mezzanine and surrounded with sound-dampening panels and entrance door for an improved decibel level during operation. A ladder and safety cage provide safe and easy mezzanine access. The enclosure features a quick-access panel that can be removed in the event of large component repair.
A floor-level Lock-Out/Tag-Out station and 12-point rotary test gauge simplify hydraulic system diagnostics. The rotary dial design of the gauge allows maintenance personnel to test each point by simply indexing the dial.
The high-horsepower electric motor is complete with a soft starter that buffers the inrush of electrical current and creates a more energy-efficient machine. All electrical components are UL listed and labeled, and housed in NEMA 12-rated enclosure. External Zip Ports allow for the transfer of data, files and programs for easy software upgrades and menu changes.
Safety systems include floor-level LOTO for the air, water, hydraulic and electrical systems. Jumbo emergency stop buttons and OSHA-approved two-hand anti-tie down touch buttons ensure operator safety. This model also features a Saf-T-Block to prevent platen drop during die changeover, maintenance and repair.
For over 50 years, Savage Hydraulic Press has provided durable, dependable solutions for applications that off-the-shelf press manufacturers simply cannot fulfill. Each machine is designed and built with pride in the Cleveland, Ohio, by Savage’s team of experienced engineers and craftsmen.
