UL’s HazLoc laboratory, which originally opened in 1974 as one of the first and largest HazLoc labs in North America, now includes several enhanced test stations. They have incorporated an automated test vessel with 80 ft3 of sampling space, an automated electrical testing station that simulates loads up to 4.5 kW, an automated spark ignition and intrinsic safety testing station with gas pressure, an enhanced test chamber for ingress protection (IP) dust testing and nine additional chambers for thermal endurance testing, all of which assist in research, development and circuit design.

While part of the focus of the facility enhancements was to address ever-evolving product safety, performance and interoperability requirements, it also streamlines the testing and certification process. The majority of the new additions are fully-automated. They also now have eight U.S.-based signatories to accelerate the final steps in the certification process.

In short, UL’s expanded facility is designed to accommodate large parts with enhanced testing requirements, while accelerating projects through the testing and certification process. With an increased staff, a newly renovated state-of-the-art facility and a global network of technical experts, UL hopes to advance innovation in the global HazLoc industry.
