Battery energy storage system enters service
David Wagman | March 21, 2019NEC Energy Solutions said it completed installing one of the largest battery energy storage systems in Switzerland.
The 18 megawatt, 7.5 megawatt-hour storage system is owned and operated by EKZ (Elektrizitätswerke des Kantons Zürich).
The energy storage system will be used for primary frequency reserve to stabilize grid frequency in response to frequency deviations.
The system is located at an electrical substation near Zurich. It could be used for other ancillary grid services and is expected to have a payback of five to seven years.
The system includes a battery management system and controls as well as AC-DC power conversion equipment.
