Which type of speed sensor is best for my application?
March 20, 2024Choosing a speed sensor depends on an application’s requirements. The most common speed sensor types are discussed below.
The Hall-effect zero speed sensors provide precise measurement of a rotating shaft down to zero speed, making them ideal for applications requiring a measurement at very low velocity or even zero speed. This type of sensor requires an external power source and provides digital square wave output with constant amplitude signal regardless of variation of the speed or air gap. Common applications include but are not limited to engine control systems, ignition timing, transmission speed and traction control.
The Hall-effect speed and direction sensors are non-contact magnetic devices that measure the distortion of magnetic fields, providing precise measurements of speed and direction. Some of the most common applications include dynamometers and traction control.
The Hall-effect linear speed sensors are used to measure the range of velocity of a ferrous target. This sensor is a complex powered device with signal conditioning and provides a 4 to 20 mA or a 0 to 10 V DC linear output voltage. Some of the most common applications include but are not limited to wind turbines speed measurement, radar speed measurement and linear output rotary sensor.
The variable reluctance speed sensor is an analog output (sine wave) sensor that can be suitable for a low-speed measurement application. The VR speed sensor does not require an external power source and the analog signal output is generated by the collapse of a magnetic field due to the interruption by a ferrous gear tooth.
The variable reluctance speed sensor with complementary output is a different version that can be used for applications that require a VR sensor with dual outputs. This sensor provides two analog signal outputs (sine wave) and does not require an outside power source.
It is also important to note that when choosing a sensor many factors should be taken into consideration for precise speed measurement, such as the application’s environmental requirements.
