Nucor plans $1.35 billion plate mill plant
David Wagman | January 08, 2019Nucor Corp. said that it plans to build a $1.35 billion plate mill at a location to be determined in the Midwest.
The mill could be operational in 2022 and would be capable of producing 1.2 million tons per year of steel plate products. The project could create around 400 full-time jobs.
The mill would produce cut-to-length, coiled, heat-treated and discrete plate ranging from 60 to 160 in wide, and in gauges from 3/16 in to 14 in in thickness. Nucor said the mill would enable it to supply plate products that it does not currently offer.
A news report said the plant's production capacity could outpace demand for plate steel by roughly 700,000 tons by 2022. The company currently operates plate mills in North Carolina, Alabama, and Texas.
