Source: Furhat RoboticsSource: Furhat RoboticsThe next generation of social robots is on its way from Sweden-based startup Furhat Robotics, and they are among the most realistic and relatable social robots yet.

Projection technology superimposes a face onto a robotic bust — imagine a resting base for wigs, but that also talks and interacts.

To develop this social robot, the Furhat team combined a custom conversational artificial intelligence (AI) engine with a real-time visual tracking system. By using a camera, the social robot is capable of tracking its audience, moving its head with three degrees of freedom, while maintaining eye contact.

Users of the social robot can currently select from three different face masks for the social bot, including the face of a dog.

Calling the robot Furhat in a nod to its maker, the startup said: “Furhat is a social robot that communicates with us humans as we do with each other — by speaking, listening, showing emotions and maintaining eye contact. It can serve customers, provide companionship, train employees or teach a language."
