The First All-Electric Bus Rapid Transit Route in the U.S.
S. Himmelstein | August 19, 2017The first all-electric mass transit bus route in the U.S. will be operational in the very near term. Bus Rapid Source: ProterraTransit Express Route 44 operated by San Joaquin Regional Transit District, Calif., is being converted to battery-electric, zero-emissions buses that can travel up to 40 miles, or for two hours, on a charge. The district’s charging stations take about 10 minutes to completely recharge a bus.
The conversion will coincide with a bus route extension to serve more passengers. The buses, developed by California-based Proterra, cost approximately $850,000 and offer quieter operation and lower maintenance costs relative to conventional buses.
The district plans to launch a second all-electric route in January 2018 in South Stockton and to convert to 100 percent electric, zero-emission buses for all routes serving the City of Stockton by 2025.
The good part is, when the batteries die a couple of miles short - there are plenty of people on board to help push! How long will it run with the AC running or is that available on next years model?
