BMW Invests in German, U.S. Production Plants
David Wagman | July 24, 2017The BMW Group is investing €200 million ($172 million) in its plant in Leipzig, Germany. The work will begin in early 2018 and includes extending the paint shop and altering the bodyshop and assembly areas.
The work is scheduled to finish in 2020. The automaker says the move will ensure Plant Leipzig is prepared to produce future BMW models.
In addition to increased production flexibility, the extension of Plant Leipzig also lays the foundations for a possible future growth in volume.
In late June, the company said it would invest $600 million in manufacturing infrastructure at its Spartanburg, S.C., plant. The plant is getting ready to produce the BMW X7, which will be launched in late 2018.
BMW Group produces BMW X models in Spartanburg for the U.S. and global markets. Spartanburg is the largest BMW Group plant worldwide and produced 411,000 units in 2016. Around 1,400 BMW X3, X4, X5, and X6 vehicles come off the assembly line every working day. Maximum production capacity is 450,000 vehicles per year.
