ArcLight Capital Partners says that its Great River Hydro unit, has closed on a $1.065 billion purchase of TransCanada's New England hydroelectric power portfolio.

With 13 facilities on the Connecticut and Deerfield rivers in Vermont, New Hampshire,and Massachusetts, the 584 megawatts of generating capacity is one of the largest conventional hydro systems in New England.

Moore reservoir.Moore reservoir.The purchase price is equal to around $1,823 a kilowatt. TransCanada bought the portfolio in 2005 from the bankrupt USGen New England for $505 million, or $864 a kW.

The portfolio includes the 192 MW Moore facility, the largest conventional hydro station in New England, and 12 other facilities totaling 392 MW. The Moore Dam includes a large storage capacity that is used both to regulate river flows and to generate peaking power.

ArcLight also owns and operates 10 hydro facilities along the Penobscot, Union, and Androscoggin rivers in Maine.

Founded in 2001, ArcLight is a private equity firm focused on energy infrastructure investments. The company has invested some $18 billion in 103 transactions since inception.
