VMI offers the most complete range of high voltage diodes in the world. VMI's SMF, SXF and SXFL series of high voltage surface mount diodes, both molded and formed, offer several advantages over axial-leaded devices. These diodes feature surface mount terminations and uniform, precise dimensions. The results are a high voltage diode that is easily pick-and-placed.

VMI’s surface mount diodes are specially designed for use with automatic insertion equipment with increased creepage distance between the anode and cathode. Starting with VMI's standard glass-body, hermetically sealed diodes, these devices are over-molded in a rigid epoxy. The leads are then trimmed and formed. The range of VMI’s surface mount diodes are 2 kV, 3 kV, 5 kV and 15 kV, 100 nS, 70 nS, 50 nS, 30 nS and high temperature, 200° C, 2 kV, 3 kV and 5 kV.

The company’s latest surface mount design is the SXFL6527, which is designed with 99.99% silver leads and offers 10 kV in a surface mount option to VMI’s axial-lead 1N6527.

Like their other molded form lead diodes, the SXFL6527 includes VMI’s film-assisted molding and laser marking. Film-assisted molding improves reliability and manufacturability of parts and the addition of the laser marking includes a 2D barcode providing lot traceability for each diode produced.

Film-assisted-molding (FAM) is a more advanced method of device encapsulation compared to conventional transfer molding in that it:

  • Increases manufacturing capacity
  • Improves device encapsulation, reducing variables that contribute to compound-filling defects
  • Improves statistical process control-related data collection

VMI laser marking (labeling) adds great benefits and device quality that significantly outweigh traditional ink marking. Benefits and quality include:

  • Increased manufacturing capacity
  • Improved marking permanency, legibility and reproducibility compared to ink marking

The addition of a 2D barcode to each individual molded device allows for new lot number traceability that provides process history and characteristics such as date codes, manufacturing dates and lot numbers of raw materials used.
