Engineers at the University of Surrey in the U.K. have built a robot designed by a California high school student that is inspired by the pangolin to accomplish tasks like digging and planting.

Taking inspiration from the pangolin, the new robot dubbed the Plantolin is designed to dig and disperse seeds, traveling along on its two wheels and using its long, movable tail for balance.

Plantolin, which is covered in plywood scales, digs using its passive claws and deposits a yew “seed bomb” into the hole.

Capable of working in tandem or digging independently, the Plantolin was built using repurposed components like drone motors from an old quadcopter.

Additionally, the design features a seed dispenser capable of dispersing seeds via a conveyor system that releases them at the back of the machine.
