The longest cable-stayed bridge in North America
S. Himmelstein | July 22, 2024The busiest Canada-U.S. commercial border crossing is about to benefit from a new six-lane bridge connecting Windsor, Ontario, Canada, with Detroit, Michigan. Named for the Canadian hockey star, the Gordie Howe International Bridge represents North America's longest cable-stayed bridge and the 10th-longest such structure worldwide.

When completed by design and engineering firm AECOM in 2025, the 27 pre-designed deck segments averaging roughly 15 m (50 ft) in length and a width of 37.5 m (123 ft) will form a bridge 853 m (2,800 ft) in length spanning the Detroit River. The structure includes two towers measuring 220 m (721 ft) high and a fan-shaped arrangement of 216 cables. The side spans on each side of the river are completed by 27 pairs of stay cables and three pairs of ancillary piers, which are fitted with tie-downs that transfer the loads directly into the ground.
Prior to opening the bridge for public use, the stay cables will need to be properly tensioned and then the road surfaces, barriers, a multi-use path for cyclists and pedestrians, plus electrical systems will be installed.
