Listening for water leaks with an AI assistant
S. Himmelstein | March 11, 2024The management of water infrastructure just became smarter with the launch of askFIDO, an artificial intelligence (AI) virtual leakage assistant powered by GPT-4 from OpenAI.
The virtual assistant developed by FIDO Tech analyzes curated data across the company’s systems and platforms to provide clear guidance to water professionals. The AI tool is intended to bridge FIDO’s ecosystem of hardware and software and streamline the capacity to locate leaks and address other water

Users can rank leaks within a distribution network by size, even in the face of multiple sources of background noise. askFIDO can also make this distinction regardless of the materials used throughout the network, such as cast iron, polypropylene or stainless steel.
The technology has been deployed in London, U.K., and across the Thames Water region to reduce water network losses through the power of actionable AI. The system has also been implemented in Phoenix, Arizona, and Querétaro, Mexico, successfully identifying major leaks, which had previously gone undetected.
This water management development stems from a partnership between FIDO Tech and OpenAI partner, Microsoft, in which actionable AI is being deployed to help reduce utility non-revenue water as part of the organization’s sustainability and water positive ambitions set for 2030.
