Atlas Aerospace, a Latvia-based unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) manufacturer, has developed a drone system to complement existing airport security systems.

The AtlastNEST is an outdoor docking station that houses lightweight AtlasPRO tricopter drones. These drones autonomously collect data and perform surveillance around airports, offering the control tower information about conditions that might impact airport operations.

The drones can reportedly operate under most weather conditions, offer protected and encrypted communications, and carry out beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) missions to about 10 miles out, offering the control tower clear, real-time aerial views from its 10 times optical zoom thermal camera.

According to its developers, the drones can monitor for any runway blockages, suspicious activities in and around the airport or on planes, perform rapid remote inspections and continuous perimeter monitoring, conduct artificial intelligence (AI)-driven anomaly detection, offer situational awareness and more.

As such, the developers suggest that the system can help security personnel to identify issues in advance, expedite the clearing of obstacles or decision-making processes, and provide security service with fast data.
