The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is setting out to determine whether artificial intelligence (AI) applications like ChatGPT and Dall-E — a text generator and an image generator, respectively — can be incorporated into current DoD operations.

To make this determination, the DoD has assembled a task force spearheaded by the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, dubbed Task Force Lima, to better understand military data and to make military predictions.

The AI applications could be used to analyze data obtained by everything from drone footage of hostile troop movements or insurgent meetings to maintenance logs for military helicopters or other vehicles.

“The Services and Combatant Commands are actively seeking to leverage the benefits and manage the risks of generative AI capabilities and Language Learning Models (LLMs) across multiple mission areas, including intelligence, operational planning, programmatic and business processes,” the researchers explained. “By prioritizing efforts, reducing duplication, and providing enabling AI scaffolding, Task Force Lima will be able to shape the effective and responsible implementation of LLMs throughout the DoD.”
