Rivian, the American electric vehicle (EV) automaker, has its sights set on a second location for a plant in the United States near Atlanta, Georgia. The project is a $5 billion manufacturing investment, including site development.

Summer of 2022 is the expected groundbreaking timeline on construction of the carbon-conscious campus, with production slated for some time in 2024. Rivian plans to employ 7,500 workers to aggressively scale toward higher-capacity production for future products. Considerations for the site include environmental impact, renewable energy production, logistics and availability and quality of talent to fit within the company culture. The Georgia site plans include a test track. “We’re happy to partner with Georgia on our new manufacturing site, which will build our next generation of products that are important for scaling our business. Our work together is driven by a compelling purpose and rooted in building a highly collaborative environment that creates a true sense of belonging. We’re excited for Georgians to bring their creativity and ideas to Rivian. We’re confident that, alongside Illinois, Georgia, is the place for Rivian to continue to scale and thrive,” said Rivian Chief People Officer Helen Russell.

2,000 acres and abundant natural space

Not unlike the company’s facility in Normal, Illinois, Rivian will work toward community engagement and workforce training programs in this location as well. The Normal plant is already expanding after getting the approval for an extra 623,000 square feet. The company plans to add close to 1,000 extra employees by the second quarter of 2022.

Rivian has teamed up with Georgia to hold town hall events this year to keep transparency among the residents regarding the company and the building site.
