A request for information (RFI) regarding the concept of an “energyshed” and energyshed management systems has been issued by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Given that the term energyshed is relatively new, the agency seeks feedback on the definition of this concept and on its application to the electric grid.

An energyshed can be viewed as an area in which all power consumed within it is also supplied within it. The concept encourages communities to consider where their energy comes from geographically as well as the resources used to generate it. DOE is weighing the potential contribution of an energyshed management system and built on renewable energy, energy storage and locally derived resources to the attainment of a more efficient and resilient power system.

The RFI invites the public to submit comments on these topics by August 10, 2021:

  • Concept and definition: Additional or alternate energyshed definitions; benefits and drawbacks.
  • Tools and analyses: Tools, data and analyses required to effectively operate and manage energysheds.
  • Planning and operations: Considerations regarding grid planning and potential changes or barriers to power system operations.
  • Resilience: Opportunities and barriers to developing a more resilient power system
  • Energy justice, diversity, equity and inclusion: Strategies to ensure the DOE prioritizes the energy needs of underserved communities located within an energyshed.
  • Other information: Additional information the agency should consider on the topic of energysheds or energyshed management systems.
