In-die installation for mechanically attached fasteners
April 13, 2021Automotive OEMs that are looking for a clean, cost-effective and high performing alternative to weld fasteners often turn to mechanically attached fasteners. PROFIL®, a PennEngineering® company, is a global manufacturer of mechanically attached fasteners (MAF) that support virtually any automotive structural application — upper and under body, closures, EV battery trays and truck chassis.
Because MAFs are joined to the application mechanically, they can be installed directly in a press line — delivering a fully automated, in-die solution. The fully automatic placement can use progressive dies, transfer tools or automated press lines.
In-die installation is particularly effective for high-volume production, as the fasteners are conveyed through tubing by a multi-channel sorting and feeding device into the pierce heads. The process conveniently eliminates secondary operations typically required for fastener insertion.
The biggest advantages of in-die fastener installation over other installation methods include reduced overall labor costs, improved part quality and dramatically improved throughput of product.
