Tesla has signed an agreement with Vancouver-based Pure Energy Minerals to obtain lithium from a project in Nevada. The material will be used to build batteries at Tesla's Reno-area manufacturing facility, which is being developed with Panasonic.

The agreement between Tesla and Pure Energy hinges on the results of several studies to determine if the Nevada lithium resource will meet Tesla's needs.

Tesla also plans to obtain lithium from New Mexico.
