Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk says the company is introducing a new liquid-cooled cable to speed up charge times at Tesla Supercharger stations.

A cable with its own cooling system could potentially carry more current without overheating, eliminating a potential bottleneck in the flow of electricity from power source to battery pack.

Another benefit is that this cable is expected to be thinner, lighter and less cumbersome to handle.

The first liquid-cooled cable was installed at a Tesla charging station in Mountain View, Calif.

Tesla is continuing to boost the number of Supercharger stations, and says it is unclear how quickly this new cable design will proliferate.
