New solution for managing the integrity of remote pipelines
Shawn Martin | March 04, 2019An effective solution for monitoring pipeline integrity is non-intrusive with the capability of distinguishing between generalized and localized corrosion. The system also has an acclaimed sensitivity of just 0.1% of wall thickness when monitoring generalized corrosion in pipeline diameters between 6 and 48 inches.
The Roxar FSM Log 48 pipeline integrity management system continuously monitors pipeline corrosion and erosion in remote pipelines. It reduces the required pigging frequency as operators are equipped with vital pipeline health data that allows them to avoid costlier inspection methods. Predictive maintenance requirements can be identified to ensure adequate pipeline capacity while avoiding fines, penalties and repair costs associated with pipeline failure.
The Roxar FSM Log 48 provides for accurate corrosion and erosion detection in remote hard-to-reach places by utilizing a non-intrusive field signature method. The system feeds an electric current through the monitored pipeline section establishing an electromagnetic field. A large area sensing matrix inclusive of 48 sensing pins is installed on the external pipe wall. When first installed, the device measures the voltage drop between pairs of sensing pins to establish a baseline or field signature. In subsequent measurements, a uniform increase in voltage drop across all pairs of sensing pins denotes generalized corrosion while more localized spikes in the voltage drop indicate localized corrosion.
The system continuously monitors pipeline corrosion enabling the operator to effectively manage pipeline integrity. It communicates pipeline health via wireless local area network (WLAN) and cellular data transfer protocols and can be supplied with a built-in solar power option further reducing personnel needs and maintenance requirements.
