Contract will bring new rail cars to NJ Transit
David Wagman | January 10, 2019Bombardier Transportation signed a $669 million contract for 113 commuter rail cars with the New Jersey Transit Corp. (NJ Transit). The contract includes options for up to 886 additional cars.
The deal is Bombardier’s third with NJ Transit. Under contracts awarded in 2002 and 2010, Bombardier provided 429 cars now in service with the commuter rail provider.
The contract will include cab cars, trailer cars, restroom-equipped trailer cars and power cars that can replace locomotives and create self-propelled trains. The Multilevel III cars will be compatible and interoperable with the Multilevel I and II cars already in service.

Source: BombardierThe new rail cars will include color infotainment screens that display real-time information about stations and connections; USB charging ports located at 2 x 2 seats; an onboard video surveillance system for security; wider vestibules for improved wheelchair accessibility; bicycle racks; an intelligent LED lighting system with automatic brightness control; and motorized restroom doors. The cars also will be equipped with Positive Train Control equipment as mandated by federal regulations.
NJ Transit ranks as one of the largest statewide public transportation systems in the United States and is the third largest transit system in the country. Over the years, Bombardier has provided it with single-level commuter coaches and multilevel cars, as well as electric and dual-power locomotives.
