Although China has long imported large amounts of worldwide refuse, a ban on solid waste imports that went into effect last year is expected to be expanded, according to, according to reports.

Causing global problems for countries that were sending waste to China, but were left scrambling in search of other solutions, the initial waste ban included prohibitions on 24 categories of waste last year. That number is expected to grow to 32 categories effective December 31.

Among the items included in the new ban, according to reports, are hardware, auto parts, titanium, wood, ships, and stainless steel waste and scrap.

Citing a desire to no longer be the world’s trash can, China has, since 1992, been the final destination for 72% of the world’s plastic waste, according to a study from Science Advances. And last year alone, China purchased over half of the scrap material exported by the United States.

Yet, that number has been on the decline according to reports and is expected to go shrink further in 2019.
