Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are conducting a social experiment of sorts this Halloween, inviting volunteers to take control of another person using software called BeeMe.

For one day, a hired actor will give up decision making while attempting to defeat an “evil AI.” Instead, game players will work together to direct the actor through the software, by voting on a list of possible actions as submitted by the players.

The actions with the greatest number of votes will be the ones the actor performs. However, commands that could endanger the actor’s privacy, well-being and dignity are prohibited.

Throughout the game, users will be able to see and hear whatever the actor experiences through his or her point of view.

The aim of the experiment, according to MIT researchers, is to determine whether users can agree on commands to help the actor complete the game or if the commands issued by the collection of players will be discordant.

The experiment, which will be hosted by the MIT Media Lab, will begin at 11 p.m. on October 31.
