Increase Your Reactor's Catalyst Volume with a Unique Bed Support Media
Sponsored Video | September 10, 2018Denstone deltaP is the revolutionary bed support media invented by Saint-Gobain NorPro to provide additional value over traditional support balls in fixed bed catalyst applications for the hydrocarbon processing industry. Because of its unique shape, only two layers of Denstone deltaP support media are needed to retain even the smallest catalyst sizes, versus as many as four layers of support balls.
Replacing traditional support balls with Denstone deltaP media can reduce the total volume of support media in the vessel, freeing up valuable space for catalyst. Greater catalyst capacity can give processors increased throughput, service life and profits. For over ten years, Denstone deltaP media has been delivering added value to the industry.
This video shows the performance of Denstone deltaP support media during a migration test designed to mimic actual process conditions. Saint-Gobain NorPro developed this test to confirm that Denstone deltaP media will effectively keep small catalyst in place and avoid the deficiencies caused by catalyst migration.
A 9 in deep layer of Denstone deltaP P1 media was placed under 9 in of 1.6 mm molecular sieve. Air was introduced in an up-flow direction at a velocity of 0.3 m/s while vibration (6.5 KHz) of the column took place simultaneously for 90 hrs.
In a side view of the transition zone at the beginning of the test, you will see minimal migration, even though the layer of Denstone deltaP media is a larger media size than traditional spheres.
After 90 hrs of up-flow air plus vibration, Denstone deltaP media supported the adsorbent effectively. There is only minor migration at the side wall. The molecular sieve layer was then removed as well as 3 in of the Denstone deltaP P1 media. The top view after removing this support media shows minimal migration across the bed.
As demonstrated in the video, Denstone deltaP support media will keep your catalyst or adsorbent in place without migration into the support media layer.
A single layer of Denstone deltaP P1 media eliminates the need for layers of costly small spheres. A second layer of Denstone deltaP P2 media replaces the remaining layers of larger support balls. This simplifies layering configurations, cuts fill costs, decreases pressure drop and can reduce the total volume of support media in the vessel. Choosing Denstone deltaP media instead of support balls gives processors the potential to take advantage of that available volume for catalyst capacity to enhance unit performance.
