Tesla to Address Range Anxiety by Tracking Charging Station Proximity
Engineering360 News Desk | March 23, 2015Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk says that Tesla has an upcoming over-the-air software update to its Model S cars. Software Version 6.2 will constantly track the car's proximity to Tesla-dedicated charging stations, range left in the battery based on terrain and other factors. By searching the Internet for information on elevation changes and wind speed and direction, the software can adjust its calculations and help ease "range anxiety" that can arise as drivers worry about running out of electric charge.
Although the software doesn't improve vehicle range, it is expected to improve communication with the network of existing charging centers. Tesla also added 1,000 "destination chargers" that are available to drivers of its autos.
“It's basically impossible to run out [of electricity] unless you do so intentionally," Musk says.
Musk also describes a redesigned driver interface in the Version 7 software, which will be standard in the upcoming Model X. The software will enable interactions with the company's auto pilot, auto steering and parking features. Version 7 will allow drivers to summon the car in a parking lot or to park themselves.
