Shell opened its first electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at three U.K. gas stations in London, Surrey and Derby. The service, called Shell Recharge, can charge most electric vehicles in around 30 minutes.

The launch follows Shell’s recent agreement to buy NewMotion, one of Europe’s largest electric vehicle charging providers. Shell says both initiatives will help it test and develop electric vehicle charging options for customers at home, at work and while traveling.

NewMotion operates more than 30,000 private electric charge points for homes and businesses in the Netherlands, Germany, France and the U.K. It also provides access to a network of more than 50,000 public charge points across 25 European countries, serving more than 100,000 registered charge cards.

Under terms of the deal, NewMotion will continue business as a wholly owned unit of Shell.

Earlier in the year, Shell opened its first U.K. hydrogen refueling station in Cobham, Surrey, with a second due to open in Beaconsfield.

Shell Recharge’s 50-kilowatt direct current (DC) chargers are compatible with most electric vehicles and will charge most cars from 0 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes.

Customers pay for Shell Recharge by using the Smoov app, a subscription-free mobile payment system. Shell is offering through June 2018 a nearly 50 percent discount on the price of electricity for vehicle recharging.

By the end of 2017, Shell Recharge will be operational at 10 other UK locations. Shell Recharge will also launch in the Netherlands at an unspecified time.
