S. Himmelstein | August 20, 2017Hippies, rejoice. The battery-electric I.D. BUZZ microbus concept presented by Volkswagen at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2017 is going into production. The vehicle, based on the new Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB), will arrive at dealerships in 2022, after the compact four-door I.D. makes its debut. With the new microbus, Volkswagen is mainly targeting markets in North America, Europe and China.

The minibus version will be accompanied by a cargo variant for zero-emissions transport of freight.
The first VW Bus sold in the U.S. in 1950 had all of 30 hp. The I.D. Buzz concept features 369 hp from electric motors on each axle that also provide all-wheel drive and the 111 kWh battery pack in the floor of the MEB chassis provides nearly 300 miles of estimated driving range. Using a VW fast-charge system, the microbus can recharge about 80 percent of its energy capacity in 30 minutes at 150 kW.
