Renewable energy greens the US grid

The U.S. continues to set new records in terms of sustainable and renewable energy capacity installations. The previous record of 37 GW of new renewable capacity realized in 2023 has been surpassed: the nation added 49 GW of such power-producing resources in 2024.
According to the American Clean Power Association, this accounts for 93% of total new installed capacity. The U.S. now boasts a contribution of 313 GW of clean energy connected to the grid. More than 33 GW of solar capacity was deployed in 2024, as was over 11 GW of energy storage. Accounting for both offshore and onshore wind, the overall wind pipeline is 40 GW, with 20 GW under construction.
Solar generating capacity nationwide now exceeds that of nuclear power. Additionally, 46 primary component manufacturing projects across the utility-scale wind, solar, and storage supply chains came online in 2024. Renewable energy-based capacity increased by over 200% during the year in Mississippi, Louisiana and Kentucky. Texas, California, Illinois and Florida each added more than 1 GW of renewable energy to the grid in the fourth quarter and head the list of states with more than 10 GW of clean power in operation.
