Preparing an artificial intelligence (AI)-ready workforce is a priority for the U.S. Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). To equip a new generation of researchers with the knowledge and skills needed to harness the power of AI, this U.S. Department of Energy agency offers an annual Intro to AI-Driven Science on Supercomputers training series.

The series has hosted over 600 attendees since it was initiated in 2021 for an immersive learning experienceSource: ANLSource: ANL focused on the fundamentals of using AI and supercomputers. The courses target undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at U.S. universities and community colleges.

The most recent series attracted more than 250 participants who received hands-on training in running AI models on ANL supercomputers and AI accelerators. The eight virtual sessions covered topics such as large language models, neural networks, training AI models and novel AI accelerators. Each session was followed by a science-focused talk that highlighted how different ANL teams are using AI for research in fields such as biosciences, climate and cosmology. To extend the program’s reach, videos of each session are available on YouTube.
