HERE uses data generated by vehicles to deliver highly automated driving. Source: HERENokia Corp. says it is selling its HERE Maps service to a consortium of German carmakers —including Audi AG, BMW AG and Daimler AG for $3 billion.

Nokia says that HERE uses “data generated by vehicles, devices and infrastructure to deliver real-time, predictive and personalized location services” that “will enable an entirely new class of driver experiences, including highly automated driving.”

Most self-driving cars rely on sensors and cameras, but the systems are supported by digital maps, mobility and location-based service capabilities that can provide real-time traffic data.

The automakers say the acquisition is aimed at securing the long-term availability of HERE and ensuring its ongoing accessibility.
