A Vietnam War cargo plane has been transformed into a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) classroom for students in Ogden, Utah.
The decommissioned C-130 Hercules, which once transported troops, cargo and medics, primarily during the Vietnam war, is now attached to the Hill Air Force Base near Ogden, just north of Salt Lake City. The cargo plane, which had been stored at The Aerospace Museum and Aerospace Heritage Foundation of Utah for decades, will now play host to aerospace lessons, science experiments, competitions and other STEM activities and lessons offered through the museum’s education program.
The wings of the plane were removed to attach the cargo plane to the museum. The interior of the plane was then repainted and reoutfitted.
In addition to transporting troops, medics and cargo, C-130s were also used for search and rescue missions, firefighting and aerial refueling. They have been used by the U.S. military since the 1950s for their ability to take off and land in rugged environments. The C-130 Hercules model-turned-classroom began service for the Air Force in 1965 and was decommissioned in 1995.
