According to a recent Associated Press report, Google has been logging user’s whereabouts, even if those users had opted out of Google’s Location History feature.

To completely opt out of the tracking feature, according to the report, users need to disable the option listed under the Web & App History feature, which culls information from the user’s Google searches.

Responding to the Associated Press’s findings, Google issued the following statement:

"There are a number of different ways that Google may use location to improve people's experience, including: Location History, Web and App Activity, and through device-level Location Services. We provide clear descriptions of these tools, and robust controls so people can turn them on or off, and delete their histories at any time."

Used for the purpose of creating a timeline of a user’s whereabouts based on mobile phone location, opting out of the Location History feature is only half of the story. The other half requires users to also opt out of the Web & App History feature, which will likely change how future Google searches will be conducted.

For instance, those searches will no longer pull up results specific to a user’s location as Google will no longer have that information. However, that is not to say, once these features are turned off, that Google won’t be able to “guess” the user’s location based on search histories.
